Welcome to the Heritage Wheat Project
The Heritage Wheat Project provides a cash flow for the conservation of heritage wheat varieties. Donations to the fund will provide cash for "on farm" variety trials as well as "bulking up" heritage wheat by organic farmers.
The fund is administered by Seeds of Diversity Canada (SoDC). It has been run since 1998 by Sharon Rempel through The Garden Institute of Alberta, then B.C.
Government and industry have not provided funds for the conservation of heritage wheat in Canada. Public initiative and funding is required to ensure that heritage wheat varieties will be conserved. Heritage wheat varieties are of value to organic farmers, artisan bakers, biodiversity conservationists and ultimately food security in communities globally.
The first business to donate money raised through a tithe on their heritage wheat sales is Ehnes Organic Seed Company and Back Forty Organics, Faith Alberta. Bernie and Brian Ehnes and Sharon Rempel are growing and selling certified organic Faith "Red Fife" heritage wheat. $1/bushel is being raised from grain sales and donated to the Heritage Wheat Project.
We issue tax receipts for donations or you can donate immediately on line.
Organic farmers are encouraged to contact us to get funding for "on farm" research trials and "bulk up" heritage wheat varieties.
