Happy Sowing and Planting!

Seedy Saturdays and Seedy Sundays are over for the year, seed orders are (nearly) all done. What do Seeds of Diversity members do now?

We don't know, because we're too busy planting our gardens, but we think that's what you're probably doing too. Wherever you are, we wish you the perfect balance of warmth, sun, and rain to get your seeds and seedlings off to the best start.

And while they're sprouting, read on about our growing Youth Seed Stewardship program, our season-end update on this year's Seedy Saturdays and Seedy Sundays, and the answer to last month's seedy mystery.

Wishing you a great growing season!

Youth Seed Stewardship Continues to Cultivate Food Leaders

Youth Seed Stewardship empowers youth to collaboratively collect, care for, and distribute seeds for the benefit of schools and community groups by providing access to high quality, locally sourced and school-grown seeds for food production on school grounds, and for youth gardeners. By engaging youth as leaders and changemakers in running the seed library, we hope to support these youth in becoming food leaders by fostering a sense of connectedness and responsibility in their local food systems.

2026 Seedy Events - Another Season in the Books

It’s hard to believe that another incredible season of Seedy Saturdays & Seedy Sundays has come and gone. How many of you made it to an event (or two, or three)? We hope you all did, and most of you should have an event close by to you. These days, there are more than 180 events from coast to coast, and while that number fluctuates year-after-year, it seems to be trending upwards. This is great news for everybody!

What was one beautiful, lively event in Vancouver back in 1990 has blossomed into a real movement spearheaded by hundreds of organizers. To them - thank you!

To you, reading this and supporting seed sharing endeavours - thank you!

Update & Call for Actions re: GMO Garden Seeds from the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) would like to thank Seeds of Diversity and many Seedy Saturday/Sunday events across the country for taking action to stop new genetically engineered (genetically modified or GM) garden seeds in Canada.

As more biotechnology companies seek to bring other GM fruits, vegetables, and garden seeds to Canada, it will be crucial to continue taking action to protect seed sovereignty and to keep GM seeds out of our seed supply and seed exchange events.

As you plan for Seedy events in 2027, CBAN is asking that Seeds of Diversity supporters and Seedy event organizers take a few steps to help keep our seed supply and Seedy events non-GMO. Read more to get an update on what’s happening and how you can help protect our seeds.

What is this Decorative Seed Collection?

This unusual decoration is hanging on the wall in Seeds of Diversity's little office. We know what it is, but do you?

There are thousands of these in existence: collections of little glass bottles of seeds, corked, and mounted in cases or decorative panels.

What is it?

Who made it?

What is it for?

Last month we challenged you to guess. Here's the answer!
